OCEANA COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION
SHELBY ROAD BRIDGE SELECTED FOR REPLACEMENT IN 2019

Date: 12/06/2016

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Local Bridge Advisory Board, selected the Shelby Road Bridge over Stony Creek, in Benona Township, for replacement in 2019. The original bridge was built in 1936. It is 90 feet long and 38 feet wide overall. This 80 year old concrete and steel bridge with a Stringer/Grider design has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. This bridge structure is on the straightest route from US-31 to Lake Michigan. This route hits the lakeshore midway between Silver Lake and Stony Lake. There are many tourists, local residents, and farmers that cross this structure daily.

The Oceana County Road Commission originally submitted our application in May 2010 for 2013 Critical Bridge Funding. The project cost estimate is $1,650,000. The federal and state government will cover 95% of the eligible project costs. The Oceana County Road Commission will work with MDOT to meet the conditions and continue the planning process. The new bridge will be a concrete and beam design.

This project will impact summer traffic flow. Therefore, the local Oceana County Road Commission will keep you updated as the project progresses. To follow progress on facebook use: #ShelbyRdBridge.
